When you’ve been forced into doing things you don’t want by an illicit cartel and been run through by a sword before another group kidnaps your girlfriend, you get paranoid. As I crouched down to remove the bearings from the drivers’ side front wheel of a 72 Corvette, I felt the hairs on the back of my neck prickle. It wasn’t the same ringing in my ears I get when Caleb came near that told me another Immortal was around. This was something else.
As I turned, a shadow fell across my face, showing the silhouette of a tall thin woman. I knew that shape well, and it wasn’t Eden’s. Neither was the perfume that drifted toward my noise to compete with the axle grease. Squinting against the sun that was eclipsed behind her head, I frowned. “What do you want Kathryn?”
“Wow, not even a hello, it’s nice to see you?” She teased. I could hear it in her voice. The shadows were too deep for me to see her smile.
“That would mean it was nice to see you, which it’s not in case you were wondering. I repeat, what do you want?” I got up slowly, and grabbed a shop rag to scrape off some of the thick pasty grease. My hands were shaking as I did it. I hadn’t seen her since I’d found out she was working for the Race. I’d wanted to kill her then. That feeling hadn’t changed so much. “There’s nothing for you here.”
“Nothing?” She sauntered in on her long legs. I took a step back, bumping into my tool rack as she reached to touch my face. “Are you telling me you don’t miss me?”
“I miss you about as much as I’d miss the clap, Kathryn or should I say Kelly?” I tossed the filthy rag at her feet, and grinned when a glob of the grease splattered on her Italian shoes. “I know all about you now. And I don’t want you around here.”
“Afraid your little girlfriend will see me?” Her voice was husky. It wasn’t the kind of voice you’d expect from such a slender woman. Her long brown hair was loose, shining like a curtain of silk. “I know all about her.”
“Good, then you also know I don’t need or want you.” Kathryn took a few more steps up to me, and since she’d back me into a corner I was trapped. “I’ve never hit a woman. Not that having you be the first wouldn’t make my year, and it’s only the second of January.”
“I know you won’t hurt me Alex. You couldn’t if you wanted to. I’m in your blood.” Her fingers reached out and tangled in my hair for a moment before she brushed them across my lips. “Just like you’re in mine. I’ll be back. I just wanted you to know I’m on Los Angeles. We should have dinner. Go to the movies or something, just like we did when we were dating. Remember all the good times we had back then?”
“Get out!” I snarled and shoved past her. “Get the fuck out of my shop or I swear to god.”
“You swear to god what? That you’ll love me until death do us part?” She held up her left hand, the diamond ring I’d given her glinting in the sunlight. “I’m your wife Alex. Maybe you should remember that when you’re crawling in bed with your mistress. Nice to see you. Next time, I’m sure we’ll have even more fun.”
I watched as she strolled out like she owned the place. I swallowed hard before picking up something heavy and tossing it against the wall. “This is not what I need right now. Not what I need at all.”
